Catalog of European helmets of 9th-12th century

The question of when I will write my first book, I have met regularly for many years, but the idea of implementing this plan began to mature only in the last three years. When I ended my employment at the beginning of 2020 and became independent thanks to the help of sponsors, it turned out that there were no other obstacles and a better time for the creation of a book would be difficult to find.

That is why in September 2020 I started the work, which I believe will have a certain response in the academic and reenactment field – the catalog of European helmets of 9th-12th century. There are two main reasons for choosing this problem; firstly, it would be difficult to find a topic that is so popular and poorly researched at the same time, and secondly, it is my long-term interest, as evidenced by the fact that I have devoted more than ten articles to the helmets of this period on this site.

The task I put upon my shoulders is not the smallest – the goal is a revision list of helmets dating back to the period, the history of these items, current location, a list of literature including dating and of course a description and schematic drawing created by graphic artist Michal Havelka. The drawing will consist of two views – front and side. Each helmet will be provided with a QR code, which will refer to the current object and additional material. I estimate the number of helmets is not less than 150, while half of the text part of the catalog already exists.

The book should be published in print, first in Czech and then in English. The planned part will also be an evaluation, including map, typological and chronological chapters. I expect the work on the catalog itself without further chapters to be completed in the second quarter of 2021.

If you are interested in the book, you can write me an inquiry by email At the same time, you can support its creation by spreading the word or becoming my sponsor. Of course, you can also contact me if you are interested in any helmet – I will be happy to share the information I have available with you.

Thank you for your support and interest. Equally thank you for understanding that this project currently has priority for me over creating blog posts.
