It is my big honor to offer you a brand new translation of study written by Zdeněk Kubík “Be Sure You Have Ample Food”, which is a continuation of my article “Old Norse Food and Diet”. Zdeněk’s study is currently the most comprehensive work that deals the Viking diet in both Czech and English internet and it includes recipes, not only analytical part.

  1. excellent article, though one part I’d like to mention. I’m a competitive powerlifter. I’m about 180cm and 89Kg. even at the peak of my bulking (eating a heavy caloric surplus) I was eating about 4500 calories, which is similar to the calories a marathon runner eats daily. 9000 calories is comparable to the diets of Strongman weighing nearly 135Kg and standing at almost 2 meters (and using performance enhancing drugs) during competition season where they lift weights that would be deemed impossible for anyone but Thor. While medieval farmers certainly toiled and worked harder than a vast majority of people are used to today I doubt the caloric intake sufficient would exceed around 4500 calories personally, and could be manageable on around 3000.
