Rekonstrukci doby vikinské se věnuje od roku 1994 jako člen skupiny Borre Vikinglag ve Vestfoldu v Norsku. Co se týče technik výroby, je neskutečně všestranný a nebojí se zkoušet nové věci. Areho práci lze definovat jako detailní čtení originálů a poctu tradičnímu ručnímu řemeslu.
Welcome to the seventh part of the Craftsmen series, this time I’d like to introduce Are Pedersen, Norwegian reenactment veteran who’s been involved in Viking age reenactment since 1993 as a member of the Borre Vikinglag in Vestfold, Norway. He is insanely versatile when it comes to crafting, as he has tried many techniques. Are’s work can be defined as a detailed reading of the originals and a tribute to traditional handicrafts.
Are o sobě říká: „Rád zkouším nové techniky, jsem fascinován uměním starých řemeslníků a baví mě zkoušet a zjišťovat, jak jsou věci vyrobené. Vyzkoušel jsem práci se dřevem a stříbrem, odlévání z kovu, práci s kůží, vyřezávání z kosti a parohu, kovářství, tausování kovu, šití… Mám široký záběr, ale v žádné z těchto technik nejsem mistr. Pokud bych měl vybrat nějakou techniku, která je pro mě charakteristická, řekl bych, že by to byla práce s velrybí kostí a tausování kovu.“ Veškerá velrybí kost, s níž Are pracuje, je získána legální cestou, avšak není dovoleno ji zasílat do ciziny.
Are says the following: “My approach to crafts is that I like to try out new techniques. I’m fascinated by the skills of the old craftspeople, and like the challenge of trying to find out how things were done. As such, I don’t really have a single craft, as I have dabbled in woodwork, silversmithing, metal casting, leatherworking, bone and antler carving, blacksmithing, inlay, sewing, etc… I consider myself a “Jack of all trades and master of none”. If I do have a signature craft, I guess it is working in whale bone and inlay.” All the whale bone that Are works with is obtained legally, but it is not allowed to be sent abroad.

Are vyrobil repliku hry hnefatafl, která je nyní vystavená v muzeu v Birce. Jeho další repliky můžete vidět v muzeích Midgard Vikingsenter a Lofotr Viking Museum. Na Lofotech pracoval rok a půl jako koordinátor řemeslných prací a muzejní pedagog.
He has made a replica of a hnefatafl game that is now on display in the Birka museum, and some other things that are exhibited in Midgard Vikingsenter and Lofotr Viking Museum. He worked at Lofotr Viking Museum for a year and a half as a crafts coordinator and museum teacher.
